What are Dental Fillings?
A dental filling is a restoration that is specifically used to replace an area of decay within one or more teeth. Cavities are one of the most common dental conditions around the world. While they can be prevented with proper oral hygiene and a healthy diet, some patients are simply more prone to developing them. In order to prevent the area of decay from getting worse, the cavity is removed and a filling placed.
Why might Dental Fillings be needed?
If you have a cavity, the tooth is slowly becoming compromised by decay. If the decay is left untreated, it will eventually get to the point of affecting the inner pulp. When this happens, you’ll need a full root canal in order to save the tooth from extraction. Before the decay gets this deeply embedded into the tooth, it is removed and a small tooth-colored composite filling is placed.
Who is a candidate for Dental Fillings?
To determine if you have a cavity, we will perform a typical dental exam. The exam allows us to see if there are areas of decay in one or more of your teeth. If you do have a cavity, we recommend having it filled as soon as possible. This helps to prevent the area of decay from getting larger, which may require more aggressive treatment.
What happens during the Dental Filling process?
Placing a dental filling is a relatively easy and straightforward procedure. We first numb the area with a local anesthetic. The area of decay is completely removed from the tooth using a slow speed drill. The tiny hole left behind is then filled with composite resin material. The material is smoothed into place and cured with a bright light. The procedure is quick and easy, and we can place multiple fillings at the same time to make the process even easier for you. You can expect your new fillings to last for many years before they’ll need to be replaced.
